THE counting of votes cast in Limerick yesterday is underway at the UL sports Arena in Castletroy.

Ballot boxes from polling stations across the Limerick and Limerick city constituencies were brought to the count centre last night after the polls closed at 10pm.

The turnout in the presidential election is expected to be around 50%. However, there are indications that the turnout for the referanda was slighty lower.

According to the local returning officer, Pat Meghen, the votes will be sorted before the count proper begins in the afternoon.

The votes cast in the presidential election will be counted first followed by the votes cast in the two referenda.

The result of the votes in Limerick will not announced publicly until the national returning officer has been informed.
