AN elderly man has appeared in court charged with raping and indecently assaulting a young girl three decades ago.
The 60-year-old, who can’t be named for legal reasons, is accused of committing a total of eight offences at four locations in Limerick city on dates between December 31, 1984 and December 2, 1988.
The alleged injured party was seven years of age when the first of the offences happened.
Garda Alison Carroll told Limerick Court, the defendant was arrested at Shannon Airport yesterday after a European Arrest Warrant was executed in Great Britain.
When charged she said the accused man replied: “Well I’m pleading not guilty to it anyhow.”
Inspector Seaums Ruane said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed trial on indictment and that the book of evidence is almost complete.
Solicitor John Herbert did not make an application for bail but indicated one will be made when the defendant appears in court again next week.
