A MAJOR search operation is underway after a young man was seen entering the River Shannon at Sarsfield Bridge, near Limerick city centre this morning.
The alarm was raised shortly after 11am by builders who are carrying out works on Howley’s Quay.
The Shannon-based coastguard helicopter was deployed as part of the search operation, which includes gardai, the Limerick Marine search and Rescue and members of the fire service. A number of ambulances have also been deployed.
Pat Kiely, station officer with the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service, said the severity of the river’s current due to the windy conditions, is hampering the rescue operation.
He added that the thermal imaging camera on board the coastguard helicopter was being used in an effort to locate the man.
