PHILANTHROPIST JP McManus is to be honoured with a medallion on Limerick’s historic mayoral chain next month.
In honour of Mr McManus’s contribution toward sport in his native city, former Mayor Kevin Kiely has announced that he will add the medallion to the chain.
Any former Mayor of Limerick can add a medallion to the chain of office - but Cllr Kiely is the first to do this since 2007.
During his mayoralty, Mr McManus’s horse ‘Just Push It’, jockeyed by AP McCoy, rode to victory in the 2010 Grand National.
Following this, the Martinstown man was honoured with a civic reception. Now, Cllr Kiely will invite JP McManus to City Hall.
The new medallion will be the 77th solid gold piece on the Mayoral chain and is being crafted by JJ Kenneally’s Jewellers in Limerick. It has been sponsored by Pat O’Sullivan, whose Limerick FC team are on the move to the Market’s Field, in a move bankrolled by JP McManus.
“No man deserved to win the National more than JP McManus and it was an outstanding achievement and a tremendous honour for all of us in Limerick,” said Cllr Kiely, “We are all very proud that we have an owner of the stature of JP in our city. He has worked tirelessly to help many worthy causes in Ireland particularly here in Limerick where many projects have benefited from his generosity. I am delighted to be able to recognise his sporting contribution to life in Limerick, particularly during 2011 when Limerick is European City of Sport, with this new medallion on the Mayoral chain which will be a historic occasion in itself.”
Cllr Kiely added the reception will take place at City Hall on Wednesday, August 10.
