GARDAI in Newcastle West as well as the Health and Safety Authority are investigating the sudden death this Tuesday morning of a staff member of Limerick City and County Council.

The man, who has not been named yet as relatives still have to be notified, was in his early 50s. He was found dead in the council’s machinery yard in Newcastle West as work began this morning.

Gardai were called to the scene, given that it was a sudden and unexpected death, and have carried out a preliminary investigation. Foul play is not suspected.

The HSA is also carrying out its own independent investigation.

A post-mortem got underway at University Hospital Limerick this afternoon.

A council spokesperson has confirmed that “one of its employees sadly died in Newcastle West earlier today”.

“The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is conducting an investigation into the fatality. The Council extends its sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased who was a valued employee and colleague.”
