A YOUNG boy from Limerick city who fell into the sea in County Clare at the weekend has died in hospital.
Aaron O’Flaherty, 9, who was from the Childers Road area of the city, was rushed to hospital after falling into the water at a popular fishing spot near the lighthouse at Blackhead in Ballyvaughan at around 9pm last Sunday.
The alarm was raised and the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were on the scene in 20 minutes and found the boy almost immediately after they arrived. He was unconscious and was found approximately 500m offshore.
It is understood that Aaron’s father jumped into the sea after him and held onto the child for as long as he could. However, a strong wave washed over them and they were separated.
The Shannon-based Coastguard helicopter was also dispatched to the scene while Gardai also attended, as did the Galway and Kilkee lifeboats.
Aaron, who was unresponsive, was airlifted to Galway University Hospital, before being moved to Dublin, where he died this afternoon.
He was a pupil in Milford National School and was a son of Civil Defence officer Cecilia O’Flaherty.
