A LIMERICKMAN, who travelled to Las Vegas with a group of friends from the city to celebrate his 40th birthday, has been killed in a tragic car accident in Arizona.
Gardai have confirmed to the Limerick Leader that the accident happened on Tuesday night Arizona time, which is eight hours behind Ireland.
The man has been named locally in Murroe as Francis Kenny and he is from the Newport Road. A city man, who was in his mid-fifties, remains in hospital following the accident.
A garda spokesperson said: “Four men from Limerick travelled to Las Vegas. There were three in the car at the time of the accident which happened in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. One is still in hospital and one has been released.”
A friend of those that travelled to Las Vegas said: “We still don’t know exactly what happened, but we are told sadly that one of the lads is dead and another is in a critical condition. Please God he pulls through.”
The friend said that it was a “holiday of a lifetime” for the men and they had been planning it for months.
“They meet up regularly in a local casino in Limerick and are great friends. They love playing cards and having the craic.
“They decided for a bit of fun to head to Las Vegas and see what the gambling mecca was all about and then this happens...” said the friend.
“The plan was to go to the Grand Canyon and I think it was when they were coming back from there that the crash happened. We are just all praying for good news and our thoughts are with their families,” he added.
