INVESTIGATIONS are continuing following the seizure of illegal cigarettes and alcohol worth almost €50,000 in Limerick city.
Customs officers seized over 86,000 cigarettes, 16 Kilos of roll-your-own tobacco and 25 litres of counterfeit spirits during a planned operation in the city centre last Friday.
Two premises were searched during the operation and a quantity of fireworks and DVD’s were also seized.
A Revenue spokesperson said: “The total seizure including ‘Gold Classic’, ‘Superking’, ‘Palace’ and ‘Marlboro’ brand cigarettes and ‘Golden Virginia’ tobacco, has a retail value of €45,000 and a potential loss to the exchequer of over €35,000.”
A man in his forties was arrested and questioned about the seizure and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
