The Munster Junior Cup was the focus of this weekend’s soccer in the Limerick District League. Here is a roundup of all the action.
Carew Park didn’t have it all their own way when they travelled to Division 2A side Castle Rovers. The Premier League outfit managed a 3-1 win but were made to work hard for the win. Cian O’Donoghue opened the scoring for Carew five minutes into the second half. This setback didn’t deter Castle Rovers and they equalised when Mike Ryan’s corner found its way into the back of the net. With the game in the balance, Carew got a penalty and Gary Griffin made no mistake from 12 yards. Jamie O’Sullivan slotted home Carew’s third late on.
Keith Mawdsley kept up his remarkable record this season with another four goals for Aisling Annacotty as they beat Kilmallock 8-0. Mawdsley has now notched up 18 goals already this season. Evan O’Neill’s hat trick and Keegan Park completed the rout.
Ballynanty overcame a young Caledonians side by a huge 12-1 scoreline at Bateman Park. Keith Nolan hit four, Kevin Barry and Lloyd White got hat trick’s while Robert Brock’s effort and an own goal account for Balla’s goals. Cian Nolan’s goal was scant consolation for Cals.
Fairview Rangers booked their passage through to the next round with a 3-1 win against Regional Utd. Paudie Quinn fired the view into the lead with a cool finish in the first half. Colin Scanlon finished off a superb counter attack to get the second befoer Garbhan Coughlan gave Regional hope in injury time with a stunning strike. However, Brian Murphy scored Fairview’s third two minutes later.
Knockainey will play Moyross in the next stage of the Munster Junior Cup after they beat Prospect 2-1. Joe Fogarty and John Carew got the goals for the south Limerick side. Dean Glasheen replied for Prospect.
An all Division 1A tie between Corbally Utd and Newport proved to be one of the best games on Sunday. Newport managed a 2-1 win. Corbally took the lead thanks to Darragh Reddan but Newport become the first team through to round three after goals from Brian O’Sullivan and David Murray.
Dromore Celtic caused one of the major shocks of the round when they beat Summerville Rovers B 4-2. Felipe Pacheco Rodriguez netted was Dromore Celtic’s hero with a hat trick.
Pike Rovers and Fairview Rangers met in the Tuohy Cup on Thursday evening and Fairview came away from Jackman Park with a stunning 6-1 win. George Daffy scored a hat trick, Colin Scanlon scored while Paudie Quinn got the other goal. Jamie Kelly’s got Pike’s consolation goal.
