Heartbreaking defeat for Limerick intermediate hurlers after extra time

There was a busy day of Limerick GAA club action this Saturday
THE Limerick intermediate hurlers were beaten 3-17 to 1-22 after extra time in this Sunday’s Munster IHC clash with Tipperary in Thurles.

Twice Tipperary denied Limerick with late scores at the end of normal time and in extra time.

Indeed Tipp also opened the game with the first of their three goals with Tommy Heffernan hitting the net insice three minutes.

Tipp were 1-4 to 0-1 clear after 10-minutes with Willie Griffin getting the first Limerick point.

Then came the Limreick revival with Mikey Ryan, David O’Neill and Griffin (frees) on target to leave it 1-4 to 0-5.

But by half time, Tipperary were 1-10 to 0-7 ahead.

Limerick now called upon three subs with Denis Moloney, Mike Fitzgerald and Paudie Leahy into teh action and all making a difference.

Twelve minutes into the second half Mikey Ryan goaled for Limerick to reduce the gap to two points, 1-11 to 1-9.

Fitzgerald, Leahy and Mikey Ryan then had points to see Limerick into the lead for the first time, 1-13 to 1-12 with 13-minutes to play.

It was 1-15 to 1-13 when Tipp found two late points to force extra time.

The first 10-minutes of extra time were tight and Limerick held a 1-18 to 1-16 lead at the break with Griffin and Fitzgerald among the scores.

Andrew Brennan had the lead at a goal when Tony O’Brien found the net for Tipperary to level once more.

But back came Limerick with David O’Neill, Paudie Leahy and Richie Ryan looking to have ensured a win.

But Kevin Fox goaled in the final minute and it was left to Tommy Heffernan to deny Limerick with the winning point.
