Limerick and District Schoolboy League side bowed out of the Kennedy Cup when going down 5-0 to strong Dublin in their semi-final at UL this Thursday.

The LDSL will now set their sights on achieving a highly creditable top three finish in the 32-team competition when meeting either the Cork or NDSL Leagues in the third and fourth-placed play-off at UL this Friday at 11.45am.

Limerick FC remained highly competitive in a well-attended tie through the opening half. The lively Aaron Fitzgerald produced a terrific long range effort after 10 minutes when flew just over the Dubliners crossbar.

However, it took an excellent goal-line clearance from Luke Fitzgerald to prevent the competition’s most successful league from taking the lead on 17 minutes through Shane Stokes.

The DDSL did go in front on 20 minutes when David McKenna cracked a well-placed effort from the edge of the box into the net.

The home side was very unfortunate to concede a second goal just before half-time. The LDSL only had 10 players on the pitch, as their hugely impressive captain Conor Nicholas was having a cut tended to, when the visitors’ centre forward Niall Mikey Nzingo netted a second.

The home side also lost the exciting William Fitzgerald to injury just before the break in another blow.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, the LDSL were still very much in the contest. However, a stunning 50th minute goal from substitute Richard English from 25 yards broke the home side’s resistance.

Despite an impressive display from Limerick netminder, Glen Clancy, the DDSL added two further goals late on through David McKenna.

The final scoreline was rough justice on a game Limerick side which secured their place in the semi-finals with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over the Donegal League on Wednesday.
