Limerick teenager in record-breaking form at Munster Long Course Swimming Championships

Talented Limerick swimmer Lucy O'Brien

A TALENTED Limerick teenager made quite a splash at the Munster Long Course Swimming Championships at UL where a string of impressive displays included breaking the long established Munster Junior 50m butterfly record.

Fourteen-year-old Lucy O'Brien from Mungret lowered the Munster Junior (U17) 50m butterfly record which stood for 13 years on her way to claiming gold in the event.

The third year student at Mungret Community College also claimed three silver medals at the Championship in the 50m freestyle, 50 backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Lucy has being swimming competitively since she was seven years old with Limerick Swimming Club. 
This year, the highly rated Limerick teenager qualified for the National squad, one of just two 14-year-old girls in the country to make the national squad. 
Lucy now swims out of the National Center Limerick and trains 22 hours a week.
The Limerick teenager recently swam in the McCullagh International Open event in Bangor and came fourth in Ireland in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly in all ages. She also achieved two National squad times for next year.
Next week, Lucy is swimming in the Irish Open Championships and Olympic Trials over five days of competition. 
Lucy is grateful for the support from the Adopt an Athlete programme sponors for her exciting road to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 as well as Compuscript, Pemcas, Irish Express Cargo, Brian Geary Motors, Dairygold and United Metals Recycling.
