WITH just over ten minutes to play at Thomond Park, Bryan Fitzgerald raced home for Garryowen FC’s third try of Sunday's Munster Senior Cup final.
At this stage, a short wait wouldn’t bother the Patrickswell native, who’d gleefully collect the silverware as captain of the Dooradoyle-based club.
Garryowen FC claimed the Munster Senior Cup for the 40th time in the club's history courtesy of their 22-7 victory over great rivals Cork Constitution on St patrick's Day.
“It’s a brilliant feeling. We’ve been in a few finals and not come out on the right side. To get number 40 on the board is a very special one," Fitzgerald said.
“We spoke about getting a fast start. Our physicality showed in the first half. We were winning collisions and putting out bodies on the line. It was a brilliant first half performance, we spoke at half-time about more of the same.
Fitzgerald’s try was welcomed by plenty of cheers from those in light blue, it put three scores between the sides and extinguished any Cork Con resistance.
“I was looking up at the scoreboard and totting up the numbers in my head and thinking ‘Do we have it? Could they come back?’, but thankfully we got over the line.”
“I think I was only captain by default with Jamie Heuston out for the season so I stepped in. It’s very special to get number 40," added the centre.
“Last year was disappointing by all accounts. We’d a few injuries, a few players missing, we just never really got going. During the summer John Staunton and the lads put in a lot of work to try to get lads to really buy into things. We are after turning a corner since Christmas, hopefully a win like this will push us on further and back into 1A”.
