NEWLY crowned Limerick Charity Cup champions Shannon turn their attention to the ODM Munster Senior Cup this weekend when they face Bruff.
Saturday’s meeting of Shannon and Bruff at Coonagh is one of two all-Limerick ties in the first round of the Munster Schools Senior Cup.
The other local derby will see newly promoted Richmond host Garryowen at Canal Bank. Among the other highlights on Saturday will be the meeting of UL-Bohemian and Cork Constitution at Annacotty in a repeat of last season’s final.
Saturday’s Cup games come just one week before the start of the All-Ireland League.
Shannon will approach their first round clash with Bruff in confident mood following their dramatic Charity Cup final victory over UL-Bohs last weekend.
Tadhg Bennett’s last gasp penalty goal guided Shannon to a 24-22 success.
The Parish side will also have one eye on their AIL Division 1B opener against Blackrock College on Saturday week.
Shannon RFC Director of Rugby, Ian Sherwin said: “We are rebuilding this year. Trying to get some continuity and structure into it is key.
“When we lost a 16-3 lead against UL-Bohs to go on and win it in the end shows good character. The key in the AIL which starts on Saturday week is bonus points - to be very, very difficult to beat.
“Even if we didn’t win against UL-Bohs, were within a point and were hard to beat. It is going in the right direction.
“The Munster Senior Cup next weekend is a different story altogether. We have Bruff at home. That will be a really, really tough game. We watched them against Bohs in the Charity Cup a few weeks ago.
“They are a really good ball-playing side and it is the Munster Senior Cup - a big, big competition. That leads us nicely into the AIL which is our target.”
