MUNSTER Rugby 7’s coach Colm McMahon is excited about the prospect of pitting his wits against a selection of top clubs from the northern and southern hemispheres in the inaugural Limerick World Club 7’s at Thomond Park on August 9 and 10.
Munster, under the careful watch of former Munster and Ireland 7’s player McMahon will face Moscow Saracens, San Francisco and Fiji’s Davein the group stages of the event.
The Limerick World Club 7s festival will see a full schedule of 14 minute matches running over two days. The pool matches will all take place on Saturday, August 9 with the next stage and ultimately the winning club emerging from the Sunday play-offs.
Former Shannon RFC back-row Colm McMahon said: “The game is pretty new to a lot of our guys whereas we’ll be up against a lot of teams with an impressive background in the 7’s game.
“We’ve been tailoring into Munster’s senior sessions and have worked out a system where we get slots when we can take the 7’s guys to the side and do our stuff.
“It has worked out well so far and we still have just under two weeks to go.
“Speed and fitness are two key ingredients for a successful 7’s side and in Gerhard Van den Heever and Ronan O’Mahony we have two guys who fit the bill ideally.
“There are a few more like that in our provisional squad but we can’t confirm who they are until we have clarity from the physios and the medical staff.”
