MUNSTER were handed a favourable draw in next season’s Heineken Cup when they were grouped with Perpignan, Gloucester and Edinburgh when the draw was made in Dublin on Wednesday.
For the second season running, Munster will play Edinburgh. Munster completed a home and away double over the Scottish side in the Cup last season to help the province secure its passage to the quarter-final stages.
Rob Penney’s Munster side will also face English Premiership side, Gloucester in Pool 6 next season. Munster have a long history of facing the Cherry and Whites in Europe’s premier club rugby competition. Those meetings include Munster’s unforgettable 33-6 ‘Miracle Match’ success at Thomond Park in 2003 and a quarter-final victory over the English side at Kingsholm in 2008.
Like Gloucester, Munster’s final group opponents, Perpignan competed in the Amlin Challenge Cup last season.
Gloucester bowed out at the quarter-final stage to Biarritz, while Stade Francais ended Perpignan’s interest in the Cup at the semi-final stage.
