LAST WEEKEND: Bruff gained a 2-0 victory over Harlequins on Saturday last at home. It was a good game which saw the teams scorelss at the break. Bruff were eager to gain a victory, this paid off when Bruff forward Sheila Ryan scored 10 minutes into the second 35 minutes. This goal came as a result of good play from the Bruff side. Bruff added their second mid way through the half when Genevieve Cullinan scored after the ball was well worked inside the Harlequins “22”. Harlequins despite trying their best were denied getting on the score sheet due to excellent goalkeeping by Niamh Cummins and good work by the Bruff backs and midfielders.

BRUFF: Niamh Cimmins, Cathy Wallace, Patricia O’Sullivan, Nicola Savage, Catherine Martin, Irene McCormack, Aine McNamara, Gillian Keane, Deirdre Fitzgerald, Louise Carroll, Sheila Ryan.

LAST WEEKEND: Institute’s Men’s Is had a resounding win in their first appearance in the Irish Challenge last Saturday, where they won 7-1 against visitors St. James’ Gate from Dublin. Institute dominated the game leading 3-0 at half time, before adding another four goals in the second half. The Dubliners scored a breakaway goal in the last minute but the tie was well settled by then. Goals on the day came from Eric Calendar (2), Gary Acheson (2), Simon Brickendon (2) and Dara Crowe. Good performances all round and the draw for the next round is eagerly anticipated. The IIs also had a good weekend with a 4-0 win against Belvedere with goals from Cillian Moloney, Colum O’Byrne, Dara Crowe & captain John Geary. A young IIs team played some excellent hockey in dreadful conditions last Sunday. Notable performances from Cillian Moloney upfront, John Geary in midfield and a strong debut from young Jamie Mawhinney on the right wing. Next weekend is free for the men’s teams due to the underage inter-provincials and we’d like to wish the best to youngsters Colum O’Byrne (U-18) and Simon Garland (U-16) who will be representing Munster.

LADIES: Before that men’s match, the Ladies’ IIs took on Quins in Division 2. In a tight encounter, the IIs lost 2-0 against a strong Quins side where best for Institute were Nicole Power at the back and the ageless Edel Higgins upfront. Whilst the IIs struggled, the Ladies’ Is had a thumping 14-0 victory over Fermoy who had no answer to the pace, skill and cohesion of the Institute forward play in particular, with the front trio of Naomi Carroll, Eimear Cregan and Katie Campbell sharing nine goals between them. Elaine Bromel, Nikki Sterritt, Clodagh Moloney, Kym Daly & Eimear Ryan completed the scoring. Next up for Institute is the visit of Pegasus in the 2nd round of the Irish Senior Cup which will be a big test for the girls against the Ulster women who made the semis of the IHL last season. Proceedings tip-off at 12.30pm in Rosbrien – all support welcomed..

LAST WEEKEND: It was a very busy few days for Lakers basketball club. The U-14 and U-16 teams were away to Cork teams. Both teams showed great commitment and worked the court throughout their games. However the Neptune B were stronger than the Limerick U-14 and were the winners at the final whistle. It was a different story for U-16 team. The U-16s led for the opening quarter and indeed for most of the game. The teams were level with 24 secs to go. Three late points for Celtic saw them take the game.

NATIONAL TRIALS: Basketball Ireland held trials for National teams and we extend congratulations to the Limerick Laker boys who attended the trials in both Dublin and Galway on their performance and wish them good luck in the selection process.

LAST WEEKEND: Lions U-18s and seniors had comfortable wins in the North Munster league last weekend. On Friday night Lions seniors took care of business with an impressive win over Newport Glen Cruisers to maintain their 100% winning record this season. Rando Kozlov was the stand-out player for Lions with 30 points while there were fine contributions also from young debutants Diarmuid O’Shea with 13 and Matthew Collins with 12 points. On Sunday Lions U-18s were far too strong for a young Celtics side. The main feature of this game was the impressive scoring performance of David O’Connell with 30 points. He was well assisted by Luke Ryan and Darragh O’Connor with 14 points apiece. A number of Lions U-18 players attended international trials in Dublin and Galway last weekend. An initial squad of 24 for the 2014 European championships will be announced this week, so the very best of luck to all players involved.

U-10: Morning Star U-10 players travelled to Scoil Carmel on Sunday 18th. There they enjoyed an hour and a half of great basketball playing against the hosts Limerick Celtic. Nineteen of the panel attended and they were not disappointed with the amount of court time they received.  The gym had facilities for their proper basket height 2 metres 60 which allowed all the players to get their shots on target. The players came away very happy if not tired from the occasion. It was a great opportunity for the players to learn how the game is played  and to improve their skills. The nineteen who played wereNana Mc Carthy, Mollie Lloyd, Sarah Buckley, Sarah Jane Cooke, Sophie Naughton, Carly Hayes, Caoimhe Carey, Anna Joy O’ Regan, Suzanne O’ Regan, Caoimhe Real, Tarn Hanley, Ciara O’ Donohgue, Chloe Naughton, Anna Doherty, Shonagh Murphy, Ella Ryan, Claire Mc Carthy, Sarah Frawley, Laura Moloney. We would like to thank the parents who drove the children.  We would also like to pay complement to the Celtic club  for the warm welcome they gave us and their hospitality. Training for the U-10s continues as usual from 6 to 8 on Fridays.

U-14: U-14 Morning Star played Newport on Sunday 18th of November. Newport started the game well and were ahead at the end of the first quarter. Morning Star picked up their game in the second quarter and the quarter closed with only a basket between both teams. Clara Hogan and Caoimhe O’Brien teamed up well to pull ahead by four points at the end of the third quarter. Morning Star finished the stronger of the teams to win the game by a single point. An exciting game throughout and well done to Morning Star and Newport on a great exhibition of basketball. BUSY WEEK: Its been a busy week for UL Eagles; last Sunday saw the Eagles overcome DCU Saints 72 to 56 in Dublin and this weekend they have Dublin Inter away on Friday night, and home on Sat 24th Nov at 7.30pm in UL against UCC Demons. Coach Mark Keenan is anxiously looking forward to the game. “This is a huge game for both teams. Demons have set the pace all the way from the start of the league in late September and we must go after the win to keep the pressure on at the top end of the league. The Cork lads won back in October in a close and hard fought game and I really want to reverse that result this weekend.”

LAST WEEKEND: UL Huskies Superleague Team had a 65 – 58 win over Brunell yesterday in Cork, the girls had a tough game, Coach Weldon says: “It’s great to have something to work on. We play Brunell in a couple of weeks in the cup and this is a good way to prepare for the game. They hustled and played some great basketball. We missed a few opportunities we might normally take and it resulted in probably our closet game in maybe 2 years.” Top scorers: R. Clancy 16, R. Vanderwal 14, M. Fahy 12. Next home game is December 1st in University Arena @ 5.00.

The UL Huskies Division 1 Team went down by 6 points to a strong Donegal side, they had crept into the lead starting the 3rd quarter and held on tight, but Donegal proved to be tough in the end.

UNDERAGE: Great win at the weekend for our U-14 team, they went to Salesians to take on the Celtic’s and won convincingly, very tough defence was played and this was a key factor in the winning of the game. The U-12s lost out by 1 basket in which was a great game of basketball to watch. Well done girls. Next weekend the U16/18 travel to Thurles to participate in a Tournament which is hosted by the Tipperary Knights. Sunday sees the U12’s take on the new Limerick Team the Rockets in Presentation gym at 11am. If you are interested in playing basketball and would like to join our Club please feel free to email us or contact Sarah 086 8309516 or Sinead 0876235967, .
