ANDY Lee’s world middleweight title defence could be set for a September 5 date against challenge Billy Joe Saunders.

This Monday afternoon Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren spoke of the September 5 date when confirming his boxer for a July 24 warm-up fight in Wembley.

WBO world champion Lee has been out of action since injuring his shoulder in his April 11 New York fight against Peter Quillin.

However, there is no confirmation of the September 5 title defence from the Lee camp or the WBO.

“I‘ll be brushing off a few cobwebs before the big one in September against Andy Lee,” said Saunders at this Monday’s press conference in London.

Saunders is the mandatory challenge for Lee, who turned 31 last week.

After a spell out of the ring injured only time will tell if Lee will also opt for a warm-up fight.

There was no suggestion from Frank Warren as to a venue for the eagerly awaited clash of Lee and Saunders.

All in Limerick and Ireland will keep fingers crossed for Thomond Park or Dublin, but Warren and Saunders continue to push for London.

The Saturday September 5 date is All Ireland hurling final weekend in Dublin.
