CASTLETROY College made a winning start to their Munster Schools Senior Cup campaign when edging past a fancied Glenstal Abbey side 10-7 in their first round tie played at Rosbrien this Tuesday.
Out-half Jamie Heuston bagged all 10 points for Castletroy who are bidding to win the Cup for the first time since 2008. The winning side made a dream start when Heuston showed good strength to collect a terrific box-kick from his half-back partner Stephen Atkinson before powering his way over the line.
Heuston also added the difficult conversion from wide on the right.
City Cup winners Glenstal, who had beaten St Clement’s College in the previous round, responded superbly and drew level within six minutes when full-back Colm Hogan touched down after the Murroe side stretched their opponents defence to breaking point. Out-half Jack Stafford added the conversion.
What proved to be the winning score of this game arrived in the 27th minute when Jamie Heuston kicked a terrific penalty goal from close on 30 metres.
Castletroy, led by the likes of hooker Mark O’Mara, flanker Ronan Murphy and influential back-rows Niall O’Shea and David Rowsome, maintained their 10-7 lead until half-time. Glenstal may rue their decision to kick for the corner from penalty awards in the opening half rather than kick at goal.
Glenstal Abbey dominated territory and possession for long stretches of the second half, superbly led by flanker John Murphy, but were unable to breakdown their opponents resolute defence. Castletroy managed to hold firm despite having a player sin-binned with 20 minutes remaining.
Castletroy will enjoy home advantage for the quarter-final stages of the competition as a result of this win.
All is not lost for Glenstal, who can still make the last eight of the Cup. However, the Murroe side will be on the road for that tie.
The quarter-final draw for this season’s Munster Senior Cup is due to be made after this Wednesday’s remaining quarter-finals are completed.
