THERE was disappointment for Castletroy College on Saturday afternoon in Toomevara when they were beaten 1-9 to 0-11 by Thurles CBS in the Harty Cup semi-final.
In what was the Annacotty school’s first-ever appearance at this stage of the competition, they put up an incredibly brave fight after being reduced to 14 men after just ten minutes.
A straight red card for Ian Coates for a wild pull put them on the back foot and while they clung on against the breeze in the opening half, they were dealt another blow just before the break when Robbie Long flicked a Niall Heffernan free to the back of the Castletroy net.
That left the Tipperary side leading 1-6 to 0-3 at the break, all of Castletroy’s scores coming from Barry Nash frees.
But, after hanging in well with meagre possesion in that first half, Castletroy were much more in the game on the restart. Two frees from Nash closed the gap to four within five minutes and although Niall Heffernan hit back with one of his own, Castletroy were building up a head of steam.
Andrew La Touche Cosgrave really came into the game and two supper points from play along with two more frees from Nash had the difference down to one with 15 minutes remaining.
Heffernan settled Thurles with his first point from play but Nash responded in kind. But again Heffernan pushed the margin back to two points only for La Touche to land a monster of a free to leave just one between the sides again.
Then, with 90 seconds of normal time remaining, Castletroy were awarded a long-range free but unfortunately Barry Nash’s effort was mis-hit and Thurles survived the remaining time to book their final appearance.
