CHAMPIONS Ardscoil Ris set down a marker that they weren’t going to be dethroned easily with a 1-21 to 0-11 derby win over West Limerick Colleges in the Harty Cup this Wednesday afternoon in Kilmallock.

The city side disappointed a week previous when losing heavily to Thurles CBS but were best here from start to finish in the Post Primary Schools senior A hurling championship.

A win for the amalgamation side from Hazelwood College in Dromcollogher, Desmond College in Newcastle West and Colaiste na Trocaire of Rathkeale would have seen Ardscoil Ris crash out.

But now its’ the champions who are in pole position to reach the quarter-finals as group runners up to Thurles CBS.

In the final round of the group stages on December 3 Ardscoil Ris know that a win over St Flannans will advance them to the knockout stages after Christmas.

West Limerick Colleges now need to beat Blackwater in their next tie and hope that Ardscoil Ris slip up.

The foundation for this 13-point win was set in the opening 12-minutes when Ardscoil Ris hit the game’s opening eight points without a single reply.

Na Piarsaigh’s Peter Casey hit two of those early points and was to torment West Limerick throughout. The county minor star finished with a remarkable 1-8 from play.

West Limerick came to life in the 13th minute and had four successive points to trail 0-8 to 0-4 but by half time it was 0-14 to 0-4.

They needed early second half goals but it was Ardscoil Ris that had the only goal in the game’s 51st minute.

The win would have been greater but for two separate double saves by West Limerick goalkeeper Glen McNamara in the second half.

Attention now turns to next Tuesday when Castletroy College and Doon meet in another all-Limerick Harty Cup clash with the winner again in pole position to reach the knockout stages.
