TWO Limerick colleges are to meet in next week’s quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup.
The clash of University of Limerick and Limerick IT will take place on Tuesday or Wednesday, February 18/19 in teh UL GAA grounds.
But Mary Immaculate College are out.
Last year’s beaten finalists lost to UCD this Tuesday, 2-16 to 1-8 in a must win game for Eamonn Cregan’s side.
Also this Tuesday, Davy Fitzgerald’s LIT ensured their passage into the last eight with a 1-14 to 2-5 win over GMIT in Moylish.
LIT were inspired by a haul of 1-9 from Clare’s Hurler of the Year, Tony Kelly.
LIT had four Limerick players in their starting team - Aaron Murphy (Hospital-Herberstown), Barry O’Connell (Kildimo-Pallaskenry), Seanie O’Brien (Patrickswell) and Pat Begley (Mungret).
They were 0-5 to 1-1 up at half time.
Pat Begley was then fouled for a 52nd minute penalty which Kelly converted to ease LIT into the derby quarter final.
Seanie O’Brien hit two points from play in the second half.
Next week’s Limerick derby in the quarter-final will see former Clare All-Ireland winning team-mates Davy Fitzgerald and Brian Lohan in opposite corners.
Lohan’s UL have Limerick players Tom Ryan (South Liberties) and Dan Morrissey (Ahane) in their half back line.
The full quarter-final draw is UL V LIT, UCC v UCD, Cork IT v NUI Galway, and WIT v DIT.
Limerick will have involvement in UCC (Willie Griffin, Adare) and NUI Galway (Kevin Downes, Na Piarsaigh).
