FR CASEY’S ended Ballysteen’s 100% record, while Na Piarsaigh proved much too good for St Kieran’s as Group 2 of the county senior football championship was blown wide open on Friday night.
Resilient Fr Casey’s ended Ballysteen’s three game winning run in the competition when recording an exciting 1-9 to 0-9 win at Newcastle West.
Meanwhile, an impressive Na Piarsaigh side picked up their second win in Group 2 when easily dismissing St Kieran’s challenge on a 2-13 to 1-5 scoreline at Ballybrown.
Fr Casey’s led previously unbeaten Ballysteen 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time. Points from Mike Whelan and Sean Neville had Ballysteen in front soon after the restart.
However, a Robert Browne pointed free, followed by a vital contribution of 1-1 from John Riordan turned the game in Fr Casey’s favour. Browne bagged five points in all for the Abbeyfeale side, three from play, which John Lane chipped in with two valuable points from play. The win moves Fr Casey’s onto four points in the table and still in the shake-up for a place in the knock-out stages. Ballysteen have six points.
Na Piarsaigh laid the foundation for their victory over St Kieran’s in the opening half after which the city side led 1-5 to 0-3 in Clarina.
A slick Na Piarsaigh side outscored their opponents 1-8 to 1-2 after the break to run out easy winners. With four points to their credit, Na Piarsaigh remain in the hunt to secure a place in the knock-out stages of the championship.
