National Master Indoor Championships

A record 400 athletes competed in the GloHealth National Master Indoor Championships at the weekend. Athletics Ireland stated that “Exciting competition and friendly camaraderie amongst competitors has always been the ethos of this event with athletes competing in the 35+ to 90+ categories in the battle for the GloHealth National Titles.

West Limerick AC’s Carmel MacDomhnaill made the trip to Athlone last Sunday to compete in four events at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships. Carmel is a great competitor and came home with four gold medals in the W60 category. Carmel won the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Other women also competed well on the day including Paula Murphy of Dooneen AC who came home with two medals in the W45 category – bronze in the 60 metres and silver in 200 metres. Mary Neill of Dooneen AC also secured a bronze medal in the 400 metres and the women’s relay team won silver. The men also took home medals. James O’Hare of Limerick AC earned himself a clear gold in 60 metres ( M60 category). Stuart Moloney of Mooreabbey Milers AC won gold in the 3,000 metres ( M35) category. Stephen Lappin also made his debut in the 400 metres (M40) and won a bronze medal for his efforts. Stephen is a great volunteer with Dooneen AC and also coaches a number of other athletes so well deserved medal for him. Veteran runner Jerry O’Connell is in his 70s but still loves to compete. Jerry won silver in the 400 metres and bronze in the 200 metres.
