National Master Indoor Championships
A record 400 athletes competed in the GloHealth National Master Indoor Championships at the weekend. Athletics Ireland stated that “Exciting competition and friendly camaraderie amongst competitors has always been the ethos of this event with athletes competing in the 35+ to 90+ categories in the battle for the GloHealth National Titles.
West Limerick AC’s Carmel MacDomhnaill made the trip to Athlone last Sunday to compete in four events at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships. Carmel is a great competitor and came home with four gold medals in the W60 category. Carmel won the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Other women also competed well on the day including Paula Murphy of Dooneen AC who came home with two medals in the W45 category – bronze in the 60 metres and silver in 200 metres. Mary Neill of Dooneen AC also secured a bronze medal in the 400 metres and the women’s relay team won silver. The men also took home medals. James O’Hare of Limerick AC earned himself a clear gold in 60 metres ( M60 category). Stuart Moloney of Mooreabbey Milers AC won gold in the 3,000 metres ( M35) category. Stephen Lappin also made his debut in the 400 metres (M40) and won a bronze medal for his efforts. Stephen is a great volunteer with Dooneen AC and also coaches a number of other athletes so well deserved medal for him. Veteran runner Jerry O’Connell is in his 70s but still loves to compete. Jerry won silver in the 400 metres and bronze in the 200 metres.
Fit for Life
It is great to see the ‘Fit for Life’ programme gaining such great momentum across clubs in Limerick. An Bru are commencing their beginner programme on Monday, April 13th - It runs Monday’s at 7pm from Bruff GAA and Thursdays at 7pm from Kirby O’Sullivan Park (The Old Convent, entrance by the Athlacca Road) for 8 weeks. They are now in Week 8 of 12 and our members have already reached 5k in training. It gives great satisfaction to the coaches to see all the smiles and the friendship being forged. With over 90 members registered, this has added a new dynamic to our club and we encourage people of all ages to get out and be active.
West Limerick AC’s Fit for Life group meet on Tuesdays at 6.45pm outside the boys National School in Newcastle West and also on Thursdays at 6.30pm outside the community centre in Newcastle West. Our Fit for Life group is a great introduction to running with a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Don’t be shy, new members to the group are always welcome and anyone who wants a bit more information can contact Denis Fitzgerald on 087 3577286 or Sinead O’Shea on 087 2976014.

Thomond Games – April 25
The Thomond Games are taking place at the University of Limerick on Saturday, April 25. Last year the event got off to a good start. This year we are expanding the event to include electronic timing to facilitate sprint events. This is an AAI registered event and all times and performances recorded on the day will count towards qualification standards and top lists. The event will be held in UL on Saturday the April 25 at 11am sharp. Registration for this event or enquiries can be sent to this email address email@example.com and one of our committee members will be in contact with you. Check in opens from 10am Saturday morning, please check in 1 hour prior to your event. The timetable will be finalised the week leading up to the event. The event will also facilitate junior events. Junior athletes looking to compete must inform us so we can adjust hurdle heights or throwing implement weights. Easter Sunday April 5 2015 at 12 noon sees a new race on the scene “Destination Limerick” 5 Mile road race organised by Dooneen AC - Entry fee €20, walkers €10.
