ST Munchin’s were crowned All Ireland basketball champions on the double at the National Arena in Tallaght on Tuesday afternoon.

The Corbally school won the Boys U-19 ‘C’ and U-16 ‘C’ in thrilling circumstances to make for a memorable day.

First up were the U-19 team who were taking on Ashbourne CC of Meath. Captain Diarmuid O’Shea was the hero of the hour, scoring 33 points in their 61-56 win. Munchin’s were 14 points ahead heading into the final quarter and despite a nervous finish, they hung on to win.

A couple of hours later, their U-16 team took to the court, this time against Portmarnock CS of North Dublin. Again it was a nail-biting contest but Munchin’s emerged victorious on a scoreline of 40-37. Cian Collins and Jaz Predijito impressed for the winners.

The All Ireland schools finals continue in Tallaght today and there is Limerick interest in the U-16 ‘A’ girls final where Crescent Comp play Presentation Waterford at 12noon.
