YOUNG Munster set up a semi-final showdown with Shannon in the Limerick Charity Cup, thanks to a hard-earned 30-16 victory over newly-promoted Richmond at Clifford Park last night.

Munsters’ led 13-6 at half-time and second half tries from Lukas Kuntz and Mike Madden as well as consistent goal-kicking from ben Sargent helped the home side seal victory.

The home side’s opening try was scored by Greg Barry on 20 minutes. The five-pointer was created by a fine break up the right wing from the impressive Derry O’Connor who off-loaded to winger Jamie mcGarry before putting Barry in under the sticks.

Munsters’ head coach John Staunton and his backroom team of John Keehan and Mike Lynch will be pleased to have subdued Richmond’s gritty challenge and will travel across the city to face Shannon on Saturday in upbeat mood. The semi-final has a 2.30pm kick-off.

Both sides will benefit from the competitive nature of the fixture which was plaed at a good pace and with a decent amount of physicality, with the season only in it’s infancy.

Richmond will take plenty of encouragement from their display as they contemplate life in Division 2B of the All-Ireland League. The Geroge Murray-coached side had tries from Gareth O’Hanlon and Gearoid Phelan, while full-back Brian Begley kicked two penalty goals in the opeing period.

One major concern for Richmond was the knee injury picked up by their talented centre Mike Kelliher, who had featured for Munster in their pre-season win over Gloucester. The Richmond management team will be hoping that Kelliher can be back in time for the start of the AIL at the end of the month.
