Croom United edge Herberstown in seven-goal thriller in Eamon Ray Cup final

Croom United players celebrate their Eamon Ray Cup final win over Herbertstown on Saturday

Division 2B Eamon Ray Cup Final:

Croom Utd 4 Herbertstown 3

IF you ever wanted to see the old adage of 'a game of two halves' in action, then Saturday’s Eamon Ray Cup final was the place to be.

An incredible game saw Croom overrun their opponents to bring a 4-0 lead in at the break.

After the restart it was the complete opposite as Herbertstown tried to salvage some pride and went within a kick of a ball of completing an unbelievable comeback.

Croom were excellent in the opening half with their front runners looking like scoring every time they attacked.
That said, Herbertstown were like a deer in the deadlights and couldn’t seem to put two passes together.

They took the lead after ten minutes when a good run by Jamie Greaves was halted but Dylan Murphy put the loose ball into the path of AJ Moloney who made no mistake, firing across Dylan O’Sullivan to the back of the net.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when AJ Moloney’s corner was finished to the net by Adam Costello.

To typify the difficulty they were in, Herbertstown conceded an own goal on 25 minutes to make it 3-0 and before the break the winners added another when a superb run and shot by Moloney ended and while O’Sullivan blocked the initial effort the striker followed up to knock in the rebound.

The half time team talk allied to the relocating of Oisin O’Grady into a forward role had the desired effect and within five minutes of the restart they pulled a goal back when the hard-working Mike Whelan belted in from just inside the box.

When Killian Reale made it 4-2 Herbertstown started to believe.

With 15 minutes to play Whelan rose highest to head home from a corner kick to make it a one goal game and Croom looked out on their feet.

However, United dug deep and some heroic defending in the closing stages completed the job.
