THE UL footballers booked their place in the Sigerson Cup quarter-final thanks to a 0-6 to 0-5 win over NUI Maynooth on Tuesday evening.
Managed by former Limerick boss Liam Kearns, UL included two Limerick players. St Patrick’s Gearoid Hegarty, who lined out at midfield for Limerick last weekend, played at full-forward and scored a point while Newcastle West’s Cian Sheehan was wing-forward.
UL only took the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute when Donegal’s Daniel McLoughlin landed the winner but it was enough to book a quarter-final spot against IT Carlow next Wednesday.
The Carlow side were 0-10 to 0-7 winners over a Tralee IT team that featured Kildimo-Pallaskenry’s Peter Nash at wing-forward. Nash was one of just three non-Kerry players out of 19 to play with Tralee.
There was also Limerick interest in Tuesday’s game between UCD and Athlone IT, a game UCD won 0-15 to 0-7, as Kilteely-Dromkeen’s Sean O’Dea was wing-back for UCD.
