There had been speculation that Earls was set to lose out to Fergus McFadden but an injury to Craig Gilroy means that Earls and McFadden will both start.

Declan Kidney has left a vacancy at outhalf as Jonny Sexton is ruled out and Paddy Jackson is nursing a hamstring injury. He has also left a vacancy for the reserve outhalf position meaning that Ronan O’Gara could be in line for a return to the squad after being dropped just last Sunday.

Kidney has also left a vacancy for the replacement tighthead prop position as Declan Fitzpatrick is ruled out and Michael Bent and Stephen Archer have been called in.

David Kilcoyne remains on the bench as Tom Court is excluded altogether after Cian Healy’s return while Donncha O’Callagha drops out of the starting 15 as Mike McCarthy has recovered from his knee injury.
