The Limerick minor footballers recorded their first win since 2010 when they staged a remarkable revival to beat Waterford by 2-14 to 3-10 in Newcastle West on Wednesday night.

Having lost 12 straight games in the Munster minor championship, Limerick had reasonable hopes going into this game following a positive showing in their opening round loss to Cork.

But those hopes looked to be shattered when they trailed by 3-6 to 0-7 at the break. However, Jerry O’Sullivan’s young side refused to give in and a fine second-half showing saw them eke out a thrillin win.

A goal from Glin’s John Wallace got them back to within three points. Richard Hayes, Mikey Morrissey and Colm McSweeney all pointed to keep Limerick in touch but they didn’t take the lead until late on when Sean Murphy poked home the winning goal.

Limerick now play Clare in the quarter-final next Wednesday, April 29, in Ennis. The prize for the winners will be a meeting with Tipperary in the semi-final on May 13. Cork and Kerry meet in the other semi-final.
