Limerick named 10 of All Ireland semi-final team for league opener

TJ Ryan has selected 10 of the starting team from the All Ireland SHC semi-final defeat to Kilkenny for Saturday’s opening game of the 2015 Allianz League against Waterford.

TJ Ryan has selected 10 of the starting team from the All Ireland SHC semi-final defeat to Kilkenny for Saturday’s opening game of the 2015 Allianz League against Waterford.

Cian Lynch, who captained Limerick to an All Ireland minor final appearance last September, is the only debutante in the team to plat The Deise in the Gaelic Grounds. The game, which has a 7.00 start, will be televised live on Setanta Sports One.

Absent from the team which lined out in Limerick’s championship exit in Croke Park are club-tied Kilmallock duo Paudie O’Brien and Graeme Mulcahy, along with the injured Kevin Downes - Shane Dowling and James Ryan are expected to be named among the substitutes.

The five coming into the team are debut boy Lynch, Stephen Walsh, Cathal King, David Reidy and Adrian Breen.

Gavin O’Mahony was wing back for the last number of years but lines out at centre forward. The former county captain has been released to play just this league tie with Limerick as he missed Kilmallock’s club semi-final win due to suspension and it was felt he needs competitive match practise ahead of the club decider in Croke Park on March 17.

Elsehwere there are further positional experiments with captain Donal O’Grady named at wing back, with regular corner back Tom Condon filling the other wing back role.

In attack teenager Cian Lynch is selected at wing forward with David Breen named at full forward alongside his brother Adrian.

There are first starts of the year for Declan Hannon and Reidy, who missed the Waterford Crystal Cup campaign as they were college-tied.
