SCRUM-HALF Conor Murray was named Munster Rugby’s Senior Player of the Year at the province’s annual awards ceremony held at the Maryborough Hotel, Cork, before 240 guests this Thursday.

SCRUM-HALF Conor Murray was named Munster Rugby’s Senior Player of the Year at the province’s annual awards ceremony held at the Maryborough Hotel, Cork, before 240 guests this Thursday.

A total of 11 awards were presented to recipients involved in domestic and professional rugby in Munster. Members of the Munster Squad including Captain Peter O’Mahony, and former Player of the Year winners Tommy O’Donnell, James Coughlan and Donnacha Ryan were in attendance, joining domestic game volunteers in recognising and honouring rugby achievements across the province.

Limerick scrum-half Murray was named this year’s Munster Rugby Player of the Year after fighting off stiff competition from fellow nominees James Coughlan and Ian Keatley.

The Young Player of the Year was awarded to 21-year-old out-half JJ Hanrahan, while wing forward Shane Buckley, of Garryowen FC, received the John McCarthy Award for the Greencore Academy Player of the Year.

Women’s Player of the Year went to Currow’s Siobhan Fleming, picking up the award for a second time the international back row was recently named in Ireland’s World Cup extended training squad.

The latest inductee into the Munster Rugby Hall of Fame was Shannon’s Brian O’Brien. While acknowledged for his contribution to rugby in Munster and Ireland, the former centre also introduced Munster Rugby to the anthem “Stand Up and Fight” and led the guests in a rendition of the song.

The club and school awards were distributed around the province with Limerick, Cork, Kerry and Tipperary representatives all receiving accolades. The school of the year was awarded to Munster Schools Senior Cup winners Crescent College Comprehensive, who were making it back-to-back wins in the competition. Tipperary clubs Nenagh RFC and Clonmel RFC claimed the senior and junior honours while Bantry and Killorglin were worthy recipients for their respective youths and mini sections.
