Jerome O’Connell rounds up the action from the Limerick SHC on Saturday as the quarter-final lineup was confirmed.
INSPIRED by 42 year old Damien Quigley Na Piarsaigh have turned their season around to reach the quarter-finals of the Limerick SHC.
This Saturday evening in the Gaelic Grounds, the Caherdavin men defeated Patrickswell 1-18 to 1-12.
Na Piarsaigh had to win to advance after they had lost to Doon in the previous round.
The result means that Na Piarsaigh now face Ahane in the quarter-finals, in a repeat of the 2011 County Final.
Patrickswell, meanwhile, will battle for senior survival when they play Croom in a relegation play-off.
The Na Piarsaigh win is all the more impressive given that they started without injured Limerick duo Kevin Downes and Shane Dowling, who did make a second half appearance off the substitutes bench.
After Patrickswell led 0-3 to 0-1 inside the opening five minutes, Na Piarsiagh then took over and led 1-7 to 0-3 after 21-minutes.
The goal was created by Quigley and finished by Kevin Ryan.
By half time it was 1-9 to 0-5 with Patrickswell still to score from play.
The Well reoganised at the break and came out fighting but the goal they needed didn’t come until the 48th minute from Lar Considine.
When Cian Lynch added a point it was 1-14 to 1-11 with just under 10-minutes to play.
But Alan Dempsey and Dowling replied with points to seal the Na Piarsaigh win.
In the only other Limerick SHC on Saturday evening, Ahane were massive 7-19 to 0-11 winners over Croom.
Sean O’Connor goaled after just 15-seconds to set the tone. He was to score two goals on the night along with Tom Morrissey and Paul O’Halloran. The other goal scorer was John Meskell.
