MUNSTER will be looking to receive a timely boost ahead of the start of their competitive season when Anthony Foley’s side lock horns with London Irish in a friendly fixture at the Waterford RSC this Friday night, 7.30pm.

Foley’s tenure as Munster head coach began with a 45-8 defeat to Gloucester in the province’s opening pre-season fixture at Kingsholm on Saturday afternoon.

An experimental Munster side, including 11 players who were making their senior debut for the province, shipped six tries to a strong Gloucester side which featured a good number of ‘first choice’ players.

Afterward new Munster head coach Anthony Foley said: “We showed a lot of enthusiasm and a solid work-rate, but we lacked accuracy and we couldn’t keep possession of the ball.

“It was a big learning exercise for our young lads out there today and I thought they acquitted themselves quite well physically. We need to learn how to control the game and how to maintain possession of the ball, and build pressure in the opposition’s territory, so we have areas to work on!”
