MUNSTER captain Peter O’Mahony has been ruled out for the remainder of the season as he undergoes reconstructive shoulder surgery today, Wednesday.

The news is a major blow for Munster ahead of their mammoth Heineken Cup semi-final showdown with Toulon in Marseille on April 27 and key RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures in the coming weeks.

O’Mahony travelled to Dublin late on Tuesday evening for a review with the specialist, and following the consultation, it was confirmed that the Munster captain required surgery on his left shoulder.

O’Mahony sustained the injury in the opening 20 minutes of Munster’s 47-23 victory against Toulouse on Saturday after he over-extended his shoulder.

He was replaced in the Munster back-row by CJ Stander who went on to turn in a Man of the Match display.
