GARDAI found €680 worth of cannabis in a car after observing the vehicle parked at a petrol station in the early hours of the morning.

John Rainsford, aged 27, of Newtown, Caherconlish pleaded guilty at Kilmallock Court to possession of cannabis contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Inspector Barry Manton, prosecuting, said gardai on mobile patrol at around 2.30am on April 4, 2023 observed a car parked at the filling station in Dromkeen.

“The gardai spoke to the driver of the car and got a strong smell of cannabis. They conducted a search of the vehicle and found €680 worth of cannabis. He was arrested and conveyed to Bruff garda station,” said Insp Manton, who added that Mr Rainsford has no previous convictions.

Ted McCarthy, solicitor for the defendant, said he would reserve his mitigation until the next court date and applied for a report from the Probation Service.

Mr McCarthy said his client has no previous convictions.

Judge Fiona Brennan asked for a probation report to be prepared and adjourned matters until December 17.
