A LOCAL councillor has called on the council to identify suitable lands in Limerick for the construction of a new multi-purpose playground to meet the demands of the growing population in the Raheen/Dooradoyle area of the city.

Cllr Joe Leddin has cited the quadrupling of the population over the last four decades with CSO data showing the population has increased from 5,934 in 1981 to 19,000 in 2022.

He also noted the only playground in the area cannot cater for this many new families and does not include accessible facilities to aid special needs children.

“The current playground located on the grounds of the Crescent Shopping Centre cannot meet the growing needs in terms of its physical size, the equipment available and the lack of accessible inclusive playing facilities for children with special needs.”

The former mayor praised the new accessible playground which is to be installed in the People’s Park over the summer.

“As a Council we must continue to invest in community facilities and the significant investment in modern accessible playing equipment planned for the People's Park must now be replicated in a new modern fit for purpose playground in the Raheen Dooradoyle area.”

A survey of Dooradoyle residents, carried out last year, highlighted the lack of suitable playgrounds and recreational amenities for young children as the largest issue of concern.
