MUNSTER YOUTH FINAL:

Cork AUL 2 Limerick DL 2
(Cork DL won 4-2 on pens, aet)

LIMERICK District League Youths suffered the headache of penalty shoot-out defeat in the Munster Final of the Inter County Youth tournament in Fermoy, Co Cork on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors were bitterly disappointed as it was a game in which they were on top for most of the game and only a late goal from the home side denied Limerick success in normal time.

Despite opening against a gale force wind, the Limerick District League side were well on top in the early stages.

However, it was the hosts who took the lead when O’Mahoney delivered for Cian O’Callahjan to head home after six minutes.
The Limerick District League were back on level terms ten minutes later when Pike midfielder Joe Murphy fired in a superb 25 yard free kick.

The second half continued in the same vein with Limerick in the ascendancy but they had to wait until the 76th minute to make their possession count.

A good run in from the right by Murphy saw him tee up substitute Michale Hanly who calmly volleyed the ball to the net.

It was backs-to-the-wall thereafter for the Limerick District League side as Cork went all out for the equaliser. The home side got their reward eight minutes from the end when Alex Bollard netted.

Extra time followed where two tired sides cancelled each other out before penalties were called for to decide the outcome of the decider.

It was the home side, the Cork AUL, who kept their nerve to progress to the semi finals on a 4-2 scoreline.

PREMIER 'A' LEAGUE:

Regional United B 1 Star Rovers 1

DESPITE blustery and rainy conditions on Saturday evening in Dooradoyle, Regional Utd and Star Rvs served up some entertaining fare in their last league game before the Christmas break.

Going into the tie Star were locked in a four-way lead at the top of the table so will look on the result as an opportunity lost.

The early exchanges were rather tentative but the game then sprung to life with chances for both sides, Star’s burly centre forward Josh Adedeji came close with a powerful shot narrowly wide of the far post before the Reds threatened with a headed effort by the excellent Fitzpatrick grazing the top of the crossbar.

An Emmet Hehir dead ball special was parried by keeper JJ Hartigan and the rebound was swept to the net by Cael Gaffney but the Star celebration was cut short by the dreaded refs whistle for an offside.

Hehir was on the end of another opportunity only for Hartigan to produce a fine stop.

Slightly against the run of play, Regional took the lead just before the break.

Some fine interplay between Fitzpatrick and Eoghan O’Donavan saw the latter striking a fine shot to the corner of the net.

Star emerged after the break determined to get back on level terms. Their midfield started to dominate with Kieran O’Doherty epically to the fore but Regional’s defence well marshalled by former Irish International Mark Sheehan were proving a tough nut to crack.

The visitor’s pressure eventually came to fruition. A neat exchange between Doherty and Gallagher saw the latter pick out the overlapping left full Pepe to blast the ball to The Regional net.

Regional always looked dangerous on the break while Star seemed the most likely to press on for the winner.
Despite huffing and puffing the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

An enjoyable encounter was helped by the officiating of Barry Curtin who kept the game flowing.

DIVISION 1A:

Shelbourne 1 Corbally Utd B 1

THE crowded space at the summit in Division 1A took another twist on Sunday when Shelburne, joint leaders going into the tie, dropped two points when being held 1-1 by Corbally at LPYMA on Sunday.

Corbally came to the game with few expectations but put in a serious shift and were rewarded for their efforts with a deserved point.

Shels’ never got into the groove that has seen them average four goals per game, much of the reason was the determination of the Corbally side with Niall McCarthy playing a starring role.

Corbally started brightly with James Kelly volleying just wide before Darragh Varley forced a good save from Shels keeper Aidan Burke.

At the other end, Alan Carr’s cross was parried by keeper Harry Bemmis into the path of Daniel Collins but his goal bound shot was blocked by a combination of Ollie Phillips and Etan Hannon.

After the break Shels went close to breaking the deadlock when Ger Johnson’s free kick struck the crossbar back into play.
Corbally took the lead minutes later. James Kelly was causing Shels problems all day and when he raced onto Doughan pass he was upended in the area before Ryan McLoughlin tucked away the resultant spot kick.

Shels' responded well and it took a double save from Bennis to keep out Brian Fizgerald and Eric Carr.

However, the keeper could do little to deny Shels the equaliser five minutes from time. Adam McGlynn raced down the right and delivered to the front post where Brian Fitzgerald was on hand to poke home from close range to save a point for his side.

Three minutes after the restart Bradley McNamara ended the contest with a third goal.

Cillian O’Shea scored twice and Liam Quinn also netted first half goals to put the home side well in control.

Both teams were down to ten men Kalum O’Shea made it 4-0. Quinn and Cillian O’Shea added further goals before D Bourke competed the scoring.

The Hoops had the dream start to proceedings when Dylan Kett scores twice inside six minutes to put the visitors in control.

Brennan pulled one back for the home side but Kett completed his hat trick on 49 minutes to restore Pike’s two goal advantage.

Kett completed an amazing day when he scored again to make it 4-1. D Browne made it 5-1 to Pike with the home side netting their second 15 minutes from time.

Newport had no such luck going down 1-0 at home to Bridge United.

In the Under 17 Premier League, leaders Holycross had their scoring boots on in a big win at Fairview. Ronan Conneely scored four, John Humphries, Ali Zaidi, Bryan Nagy, C Noonan, Troy Burchill, L Kinkead and H McAteer also netted while Ollie Heffernan was on the mark for Rangers.
