OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY:

Mayo District League 1 Limerick District League 2

A BLISTERING start by the Limerick DL set the stage for a memorable semi-final win in the Oscar Traynor Trophy away to Mayo on Sunday afternoon.

John Lysaght’s men were out of the traps like a flash and scored twice in the opening five minutes for what proved an insurmountable lead.

A couple of injuries to key players, Tom Kidd and Joel Coustrain, forced the manager to call up reinforcements and he pulled a masterstroke convincing Kieran O’Connell to come on board.

The Regional captain, fresh from leading his side to a Tuohy Cup win last week, was superb in the middle of the park, opening the scoring within two minutes before having to retire through injury.

Current Irish international Adam Lipper added to his reputation with a masterful performance at the heart of the Limerick defence.

With the spectators still coming through the turnstiles, Limerick grabbed the lead when Tommy Frawley delivered a cross for his Regional team mate O’Connell to calmly control the ball and fire home from ten yards.

Before the home side had time to regroup Limerick added to their tally. A foul on the speedy Leon Daly presented Shane Walsh with a penalty kick which he duly struck with venom into the top right-hand corner.

The home side were back in the tie midway through the opening half when captain, Jordan Loftus took advantage of a defensive slip to score from distance.

As expected, Mayo went all out for an equaliser after the restart but despite having plenty of possession, the Limerick rearguard ably led by Lipper ensure their goalkeeper had only to deal with the routine.

In fact, it was Limerick who went closest to the next goal when Conor Coughlan’s shot struck the crossbar.

Luckily it was not needed as Limerick held on for a memorable win and they will meet the Wexford DL in the final with the venue to be decided by the toss of a coin.

PREMIER LEAGUE:

Geraldines 0 Fairview Rgs 2

Fairview Rgs kept their title charge firmly on track with a hard-earned win over Geraldines at Garryowen on Sunday morning.
The Blues received notice following ‘Dines display in their last outing versus Pike Rvs, so came well prepared for the battle.

A goal in either half by Oleg Vysochan, both created by Darragh Rainsford, secured the win.

With Carew Park having been removed from the league following their second walkover, nearest challengers, Pike Rvs gained three points but Sunday’s result sees Fairview maintain their nine-point advantage at the top of the table.

Rainsford and Vysochan gave notice in the opening minutes of the threat they posed when the latter was denied by a fine save from Dines keeper, Joe Zaquieu.

The keeper could do little to keep out the opening goal midway through the half.

Shane Duggan played the ball wide to Rainsford who cut outside and inside his marker before crossing to the back post where Vysochan was on hand to chest the ball over the line.

Geraldines responded well but just before the break went close to levelling when Tony Mambuana was denied by Josh McCarthy and when the rebound fell to Alan Keane, he was denied by a number of Fairview bodies.

‘Dines continued to press after the break, Keane’s front post header was well saved by McCarthy and shortly after Shane Dillon headed narrowly over the top from Cian Fitzgerald’s free kick.

Fairview’s discomfort was eased midway through the second half.

Shane Dillon played a ball in over the Fairview defence where the inrunning Keane was denied by another McCarthy save and from a quick breakaway, Jeffry Judge played a ball over the ‘Dines defence for Rainsford to race past the defender before pulling the ball across the face of goal from Vysochan to volley home.

As the game petered out, Gbadebo Habideen forced a fine save from Zaquieu and then teed up Duggan for a shot but again the keeper saved.
