Limerick Desmond League complete weekend junior soccer round-up

This is a busy period for Limerick Desmond League junior soccer fixtures

FAI JUNIOR CUP FIRST ROUND:

MOUNTSHANNON CELTIC 0 RATHKEALE 1

Rathkeale travelled to Scarriff on Sunday to play Mountshannon Celtic in the first round of the FAI Junior Cup.

The Desmond side started well and took the game to the hosts from the off with a few mazy Michael Mulcahy runs casing problems for the home defence. A long clearance from keeper Brendan Carmody on ten minutes was controlled well by Chris Carey who was unlucky not to see his strike find the net.

On twenty-three minutes came the games only goal, a delightful Gary Enright free kick came to Darren Jones who read the flight of the ball brilliantly and duly found the net. Unfortunately he dislocated his knee in the process and was replaced by Barry Coleman. From there to the interval Rathkeale had a few half chances while not being troubled defensively.

Into the second half and again the Desmond side dominated possession on a poor pitch. Jack Keogh, a replacement for Jack Geoghegan turned his defender and pinged a ball to Coleman who set up Mulcahy who finished but somehow was judged to be offside.

The O’Shea brothers and Cian Costello dealt with everything at the back while Jack Hennessy and Enright broke everything up in the middle third. Mountshannon had one chance near the end with a speculative effort that hit the bar following a free kick. Overall Rathkeale were by far the better team on the day.

Creeves Celtic 3  Tulla United 3, aet,

Creeves Celtic won 5-4 on pens

Plenty of drama in Newbridge on Sunday afternoon in the FAI clash between Creeves Celtic and Clare premier division side Tulla Utd.

It looked like Creeves had an advantage of being at home against a side playing their only their second game of the season. It was the Clare side who held the aces at half time as they led two nil with goals from Dara Ryan and Ayoub Aguerram.

Creeves started well in the second half and James O’Connor, who scored their first goal the previous week against St Itas in the Munster Junior, matched this on Sunday to give his side a life line. This was short-lived as Eoin Hassett restored Tulla’s two goal cushion.

However Creeves showed their resilience and managed to cut the deficit again thanks to Eoin McEnery before Darragh O' Connor equalized to send the tie to extra time. No more goals however and so onto penalties where Creeves came out on top 5-4.

Askeaton Kilcornan 1 NCW Town 2

The only all-Desmond clash was in Pairc Eas Geitne where Askeaton/Kilcornan entertained Newcastle West Town.

This was a very competitive contest and the first half was evenly contested with only a few half chances for both sides. A very impressive Askeaton-Kilcornan side gave every bit as good as they got up until Town took the lead on fifty seven minutes when Jake Powers shot was deflected away from the home keeper following a Jack Duggan cross.

Town doubled their lead five minutes later with a sublime volley from the edge of the box from Dylan Moloney nestled in the top right hand corner. Askeaton-Kilcornan made a host of changes to try get back into the match and ten minutes later a John McCarthy bullet header from a Ray Kelly corner kick halved the deficit to set up a tense finish.
