THE EIGSE literary and arts festival kicked off on Thursday night and will commemorate the late poet Michael Harnett in Limerick this weekend.
Newcastle West, the town that was home and helped shape the late writer, Michael Hartnett, will play host to a wide range of talented poets, writers, musicians, singers and artists in a packed programme of exciting and engaging events.
On Thursday, The Hit Machine Drummers performed in the square before leading a Lantern Parade through the town to the opening ceremony in Newcastle West Library.
At 8pm the festival was officially opened with the Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerard Mitchell, followed by the presentation of the Michael Hartnett Poetry Award.
At 8.30pm, a special collaboration between the festival and Cleary’s Window Sessions at Cleary’s Bar, South Quay, saw Jack O'Rourke perform an intimate gig.
