THREE Limerick hurling stars played a key role in the University of Limerick's Freshers Hurling League final victory over DCU on Tuesday evening in Dublin. UL ran out 2-15 to 0-12 winners over DCU, James Coughlan, Matthew Fitzgerald and Hugh Flanagan were all part of the Castetroy college's outfit.
Ballybrown's James Coughlan captained UL, Monaleen's Matthew Fitzgerald impressed in midfield and Limerick senior hurling panelist Hugh Flanagan lined out at corner forward. Fitzgerald hit the back of the net from the penalty spot in the first half.
Coughlan, Fitzgerald and Flanagan were all part of the Limerick U20 hurling panel this this year. Garryspillane clubman has enjoyed a succesful 2025 winning a Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship and an U20 A Hurling Championship with his club.
There was plenty of Limerick involvement in the University of Limerick fresher hurling management team. Dave Clohessy of Fedamore was in charge of the team alongside Adrian O'Sullivan and Cian Hederrman. Adrian O'Sullivan was coach of the Cork camogie team that were defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland final this year.
Ballybrown senior hurling goalkeeper Cian Hederrman saw his club reach the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship semi-final where they were defeated by Doon.
