FORMER Clare hurler Aaron Fitzgerald has revealed that he received death threats following an incident with Limerick senior hurler Gearoid Hegarty in the 2022 Munster Championship.

Fitzgerald ended up on the ground after tangling with Hegarty and referee Colm Lyons dished out a second yellow card to the Limerick wing forward and Hegarty received his marching orders on 64 minutes.

The ex Clare defender was speaking with Colm Parkinson about the incident on the Smaller Fish Podcast this week.

“I felt contact and I went down. I’m OK now after it anyway! I had death threats and everything through Instagram and Facebook and everything over it. It was an awful couple of weeks, to be honest with you," said Fitzgerald.

The sides played out a 1-21 to 0-24 draw in the final round of the Munster SHC round-robin series and three weeks later Limerick defeated Clare 1-29 to 0-29 after extra time in the Munster SHC final.

“I had three or four lads with death threats and I’d say I had eight or nine other messages to my personal account. These weren’t even people who tried to hide themselves, they were normal people.

“I can remember, I was sitting down beside herself on the couch and I was going to write back to one of these lads.

“I picked and chose who I was writing back to, he was a small little scrawny fella and I was going to say did he want my address if he wanted to call down.

“But she wasn’t long reminding me that we had two kids in the house so that wasn’t long going out the window.

“I just went off Facebook and Instagram for a while and let it mellow out.”

Fitzgerald has enjoyed a succesful club campaign with the Eire Óg Inis football and hurling teams this year. This weekend he will play in the Munster SFC semi-final against St Finbarr's and on November 30 the Clare champions face Ballygunner in the Munster SHC final in Semple Stadium, Thurles.
