LIMERICK will now switch their focus to a local derby against Clare in round five of the Allianz Hurling League on Sunday at 3.45pm in the TUS Gaelic Grounds.
Yesterday's scheduled clash between Limerick and Kilkenny in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League was called off due to an unplayable pitch at UPMC Nowlan Park caused by the recent heavy rain. The decision to postpone the Round four fixture was announced on Sunday morning.
The round four fixture could be refixed for St Patrick's weekend as it is the only free weekend remaining in the National Hurling League calendar.
John Kiely's Limerick side are on three points after two games in the Division 1A league table. It finished all square between the 2023 All-Ireland champions and Cork in round two, while the Shannonsiders edged past Tipperary in round three of the competition.
Limerick defeated next Sunday's opponents Clare twice last year in the Munster senior hurling championship. All-Ireland champions Clare suffered a surprise 1-23 to 1-17 defeat to Wexford in Round four of the league at Ennis yesterday. Clare are yet to win a game in Division 1A of the Allianz League this year.
Mike Casey, Barry Nash, Declan Hannon, Cathal O'Neill and Seamus Flanagan were all in line to make their first starts for Limerick in 2025 against Kilkenny. Meanwhile, Peter Casey and Tom Morrissey were named on the bench for the Nowlan Park clash.
Doon clubman Darragh O'Donovan is yet to feature for the 2024 Munster champions this year. Kyle Hayes, William O'Donoghue, Gearoid Hegarty and Sean Finn are all currently sidelined with injuries.
Kiely's charges had a bye in the opening round of the Allianz Hurling League. Limerick senior hurling selector Liam Cronin has previously worked with the Clare senior hurling team. The Cappamore native was added to the Kiely's backroom team this year.
Six days later, Limerick host Galway on Saturday March 8 in the TUS Gaelic Grounds at 7.30pm.Limerick finish off their Allianz Hurling League campaign against Wexford on March 22 at the Ennis road venue.
Clare senior hurling manager Brian Lohan has gradually added his experienced players back into his side's starting XV.
Tony Kelly, Mark Rodgers, John Conlon and David Fitzgerald all started for Clare for the first time against Wexford yesterday.
