NEWCASTLEWEST eased to victory over Glenroe to maintain their perfect start to their Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship campaign on a scoreline of 1-20 to 0-17 in Ballyagran on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies, who breezed past Granagh Ballingarry in their opening fixture, ran out comfortable winners against Glenroe with a 43rd minute Brian Hurley goal effectively ending the game as a contest.

The West Limerick men led 0-6 to 0-4 by the quarter hour in a competitive opening. However, that was to be as close as the two sides got as by the 22nd minute Glenroe trailed by double scores at 0-5 to 0-10. A Brian Hurley point from a sideline cut ended the half as Newcastlewest led by six at the interval 0-13 to 0-7.

Mark O’Connell chipped over three pointed frees for Glenroe in between scores from Con Hayes and Eoin Hurley shortly after half-time to make it 0-18 to 0-10. However, Brian Hurley’s goal eight minutes after the restart put eleven points between the sides.

Mark O’Connell fired over six placed balls in the remaining quarter-hour as the Magpies hit just two further scores through Con Hayes and Mike McMahon.

Glenroe will now focus on their meeting with Effin next Thursday as they look to get the campaign up and running. Meanwhile, Newcastlewest will take on Bruff.
