Graphic Content: Outrage as dog is left 'screaming in pain' on Limerick road on Christmas Day

THERE WAS an outpouring of outrage and sadness when an elderly dog was found abandoned on the side of a Limerick road on Christmas Day.

The dog was found by a couple on the side of the road in Ballyclough screaming in pain and clearly in agony.

The couple took the animal to Rockhall Veterinary where she is now under the care of Limerick Animal Welfare.

Marie O'Connor from Limerick Animal Welfare said the dog is covered in tumours and could not stand due to pressure sores on her paws.

"She has been neglected for quite a while. She was screaming in pain, there is no excuse for this sort of behavior.

"We are a 24/7 emergency service, they could have called us and we could have taken her to the vets straight away, there was no need for her to be abandoned.

"The vet couldn't touch the poor thing without her screaming so she was given strong painkillers so they could do an exam on her".

Unfortunately the extent of the dog's injuries mean she may have to be put to sleep.
