Some of the pupils from Thomond Primary School who took part in the Christmas Jumper swap
THOMOND Primary School in Ballynanty on the northside of the city had a novel idea on how to reduce reuse and recycle in an effort to shrink their carbon footprint this Christmas.
On Friday, pupils of all ages and from all classes took part in a Christmas Jumper Swap wherein 43 Christmas jumpers, which might otherwise have ended up in landfill got a new lease of life, as children got to swap their old festive sweaters for a new-to-them Christmas jumper.
"Parents are put under a lot of pressure this year and we said this is a way to help them reduce their cost at Christmas," Principal Sinead Toomey told Limerick Live.
As part of the initiative, the school plans to sell any leftover jumpers for €2 each with the proceeds being used to buy bird seed to feeding birds over the winter.
As for plans for next year, the principal hopes other schools will follow Thomond Primary School's lead. "It went into the calendar for next year already and we would love if every school in Limerick did it.”
