Jason Quirke of Nautic Construction and Sr Eileen Kelly signing the contract for a new €5m extension at Scoil Pól, Kilfinane
A COUNTY Limerick secondary school is looking to expand its teaching space for students through a new multi-million-euro extension.
The Scoil Pól Kilfinane Board of Management along with the design team and Nautic Construction LTD officially signed the contract for a new €5m extension on Monday, November 21.
“This extension is critically needed to cater for the educational needs of our ever-expanding school,” principal Mike O’Hara told Limerick Live.
Scoil Pól, Kilfinane began as a secondary school for girls in 1915. In 1968 Scoil Pól became a co-educational school. Nine years later the new secondary school was opened.
Construction on the new facilities began on Monday, November 28, with the project expected to take approximately 13 months to complete.
The extension includes eight new classrooms, new music, art and science rooms, a new female student toilet block along with offices and disabled access toilets, all at the Vale View end of the school site.
The works also include a new vehicular entrance off the Kilfinane/Tipperary road which will incorporate ten car parking spaces for school staff and a redesign of the student entrance at that side of the school.
The works also include some repurposing of existing rooms internally, explained Mr O’Hara.
“Our current DCG and IT rooms will be repurposed to a new Wood Technology and Construction Studies room, the library changes to a new DCG room while the existing old woodwork room will become the new IT and project completion room,” he stated.
The library will be relocated to the centre of the school, while additional career guidance offices will also be included as part of the extension.
“Adding these modern teaching and learning and support spaces will address the needs of our students and full school community,” Mr O’Hara added.
