One of Limerick's oldest residents celebrates 105th birthday

Sister Patricia O'Neill celebrated her 105th birthday in style at Catherine McAuley House Nursing Home in Limerick city

LOVELY and warm birthday celebrations were held in a Limerick nursing home for a religious sister who was born during the height of World War One.

Sister Patricia O’Neill was born in Bracknagh, Rathangan in County Kildare on November 11, 1917, just over 105 years ago.

Her birthday celebrations began with a morning Mass in the chapel at Catherine McAuley House Nursing Home on Old Dominic Street in Limerick city, where she now resides.

During the Mass, Patricia was presented with her fourth commemorative coin and a signed congratulatory letter from President Michael D Higgins.

Irish citizens who turn 100 receive a commemorative coin and a new one is designed for each consecutive birthday.

Later in the afternoon, Patricia was treated to a celebratory meal and a party for the residents and staff.

A volunteer from the Sisters of Mercy conducted a sing-song whilst playing the piano which a representative from Catherine McAuley House said was enjoyed by all.

The now 105-year-old was presented with a gift from her Sisters of Mercy, a bouquet of flowers and a gift from her care team.

Patricia entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1951 and has spent all of those years as a dedicated member of the religious order.

Having also trained as a nurse Sr Patricia gave many years of voluntary work within the health service.

“[Patricia] became a resident of Catherine McAuley House Nursing home in 2009 and when her health allows she is the life and soul of the house,” a representative from the nursing home said.

“She was noted for having a great sense of humour, she has enjoyed her life and loved to travel around Ireland.

“She is a wonderfully creative individual and was always gifted in arts and crafts, she would use her talents to raise funds for missions and to help the poor,” The representative added.

Patricia always took a great interest in her family, she loves music and loves to sing.

Patricia would attribute her long life to a good diet and not taking life too seriously.
