BREAKING: James Collins elected chairman of Limerick metropolitan district

The new chairman of the metropolitan district, Cllr James Collins

FIANNA Fail councillor James Collins has been elected as chairman of the metropolitan district.

The City West area member, a publican by trade, secured the chain of office after winning 11 of the 20 votes available at the annual general meeting of the metropolitan district this Friday morning.

His election comes as part of a Fianna Fail-Fine Gael power sharing pact, which saw Cllr Michael Sheahan become the new Mayor of Limerick last Friday.

There were also nominations for Labour councillor Elena Secas.

Meanwhile, fellow Fianna Fail councillor Kieran O'Hanlon, has been elected as deputy chairman, beating off competition from Cllr Sharon Benson.

It is the second high-profile role in succession Cllr Collins has held, following his year as the Mayor of Limerick.

Absent from the annual general meeting was the Independent councillor Frankie Daly.

More to follow later.
